Scotland football fans explain why they’re supporting Italy against England on Sunday:

These days there are few questions, aside from that one about the constitution, that elicit such an immediate response from Scots than “Do you support England when they play football?”

Some believe that lending any support to the Auld Enemy is nothing short of treachery. But for many who will be backing Italy on Sunday night, it is not so simple.

Stephen Wray, 42, who will be watching the game from his home in Barrhead in East Renfrewshire, “I’ve never had this with English football or English players.”
He says his natural dislike of the England team has “mellowed over the years”, but that he still can’t bring himself to support them “under any circumstances.”
“I think they’re about to meet their match on Sunday and I expect a 2-0 win for Italy.”

David Redburn, 51, who is originally from the town of Prestonpans near Edinburgh, will be watching the game with his English wife and sons.
He says he has “sometimes” supported England in the past, but will be rooting for Italy on Sunday after being disgusted with the way the team beat Denmark.
“After watching that bunch of diving cheats, I want Italy to win it,” he says, a reference to the controversial penalty won by Raheem Sterling and converted (in the end) by Harry Kane.
“I always thought that England were better than resorting to that. I was not impressed by the blatant diving and intimidation tactics.”

Holly McCallum, 36, is originally from Glenrothes in Fife. Like many Scots, she will also be supporting Italy.
Says she has no natural hatred of the English football team but finds the hype around them – and the biased commentary on domestic TV channels – exceptionally grating.
